Pawpaw Hicks, was Edward Franklin Hicks (1882-1957), born in McNair, Jefferson County, Mississippi. Family stories say that Pawpaw as a youth, went by the name Eddie, but did not have a middle name. Later in life someone (probably his uncle Caleb Franklin Farrar) told him he should have a middle name so he chose Franklin. My dad, my brother Carl and I have the middle name Franklin.

His father was Charles Edward "Ed" Hicks (1853-1932), born in Jefferson County, Mississippi. He was a farmer and county commissioner in Jefferson County. Pawpaw Hicks' mother, Sarah "Sallie" Johnson Hicks (1856-1944), was from a long line of devout Methodists ministers in Southwest Mississippi. Sallie and husband Charles Edward "Ed" Hicks, as well as other Jefferson County Hicks relatives, are buried in the Fayette City Cemetery. Other Hicks relatives are buried in the Darden Cemetery, Fayette, MS and Natchez City Cemetery, Natchez, MS.

On July 11, 1905, Edward Franklin Hicks married Delphine (Della) Gertrude Goetz (1883-1984), in Natchez. They had five children Elizabeth Catherine Eidt (1906-1993), Delphine Gertrude Voss (1912-2000), John Edward Hicks (1915-1989), Carl Franklin Hicks (1917-2006) and Harold Frassle Hicks (1921-2005).

His Natchez business career included working as a salesman for the Salvo & Berdon Candy Company, operating a grocery store on St. Catherine Street with his Uncle Henry under the name Henry Frassle Dealer in Staples & Fancy Groceries, Frassle & Hicks, and later Piggly Wiggly No. 2, then was co-owner of Stein & Hicks Wholesale Grocery with Mr. William Stein. He had extensive residential and commercial real estate holdings.

A picture of Pawpaw that he gave to his children has the following inscription offering excellent advice:
Never spend all you make.
Start saving, early and regularly.
Don't steal or lie, be honest.
Be on time.
