Hon. Charles Edward Hicks Died Thursday At Home Near Fayette
The death of Hon. Charles Edward Hicks occurred Thursday evening, December 8, 1932 at his home in the Ebenezer community eight miles east of Fayette, following an illness of only five days. Mr. Hicks suffered a heart attack last Saturday just after returning to his home from a trip to Brookhaven. He thought his trouble was indigestion, and feeling better on Sunday drove his car to Fayette and visited his family physician. On Monday, he became ill again and continued to grow worse until the end, which came at 6:10 o'clock Thursday evening.
Announcement of his death came as a severe shock to numerous Fayette friends, who knew of his illness but had no idea of its serious character. Mr. Hicks was born December 17, 1863, and was nearly 79 years of age. He was one of the most splendidly preserved men for his age that the writer has ever known and had the appearance of a man fifteen years younger. He was active in the management of his business affairs, interested and well informed in public affairs, and was one of Jefferson county's most influential citizens. His friendliness, quiet dignity and intelligent and tolerant conversation attracted friends who liked him and admired him. He will be greatly missed and widely and sincerely mourned.
Mr. Hicks was a son of the late Hon. Edward Herndon Hicks and Mrs. Lizzie Stowers Hicks and was born at their plantation home about one mile west of Fayette. He was happily married to Miss Sallie Johnson of Jefferson county on October 11, 1876, and they had lived happily together for more than 56 years. To their union three sons and three daughters were born, viz.; Mrs. C.F. Farrar, Jonesville, La.; Edward F. Hicks, Natchez; Mrs. W.M. Puffer, Bentonia; Olive J. Hicks, Jefferson county; Mrs. F.R. Thompson Carter, who with their mother, survive; and Harold Hicks, whose death occurred when he was a youth, December 21, 1895. Deceased is also survived by ten grandchildren, viz; Mrs. Allen Farmer, Jackson; Miss Florine Farrar, Jonesville, La.; Mrs. Duncan Eidt, Miss Delphine Hicks, John Hicks, Carl Hicks and Harold Hicks, Natchez; Charles Edward Hicks, Jefferson county; Frazier Thompson and Thelma Thompson Carter. The great-Grandchildren are Edward Duncan Eidt and David Eidt, Natchez.
During his long and active life Mr. Hicks had been prominently identified with the educational and civic affairs of the county. Several years ago he served one term as a member of the Jefferson county board of supervisors, and for the past several years he had been a member of the board of trustees of the Jefferson County Agriculture High School.
He was a life long and consistent member of the Methodist denomination and after the old Ebenezer church was abandoned he moved his membership to Fayette.
Arrangements have been made to hold the funeral this afternoon (Friday} from the home, at 3:30 o'clock and interment will be in Fayette Cemetery.
We join other friends of this good man, excellent husband and devoted father in deploring his passing and in an expression of sincere condolence and sympathy to his grieving family. They may find a mead of comfort in the knowledge that he has "fought a good fight and kept the faith," that his life had been full of useful service, and that he died full of ripe years and with the respect and esteem of his entire acquaintance.
