Eugene P. Smith "Smitty", age 91 of Merrillville, IN passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2008.
Eugene is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Ann C. (nee Repay); 2 daughters: Jeanette (Dimitri) Vuletic and JoAnn (late Dr. Joseph) Kahl; son, Robert E. (Pamela A.) Smith; 4 grandchildren: Thomas Kahl, Betsy Kahl, Cathy (Glenn) Taylor, Christina Vuletic; great-granddaughter, Aurelia; and sister, Rose O'Connor.
Preceded in death by 7 brothers: Robert-Owen, Cosmas, Bernard, John, Forrest, Francis and Edmund; 2 sisters: Margret Palladino and Eleanore Hopkins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday, November 14, 2008 at 10:00 AM directly at Our Lady of Consolation Church, 8303 Taft Street, Merrillville, IN with Rev. Camillus Janas officiating.
Friends may visit with the family directly at church Friday from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 10:00 AM. Interment at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN.
Visitation will be held at Geisen Funeral Home, 7905 Broadway, Merrillville on Thursday, November 13, 2008 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A Parish Prayer Service will be held Thursday at 4:00 PM. An American Legion Service will be held at 6:00 PM, followed by a Knights of Columbus Service at 6:30 PM.
Eugene "Gene" Smith was a long time resident of Gary and Merrillville. He worked at Inland Steel Company prior to entering the U.S. Army during World War II. He then returned to Inland Steel Company where he worked for 45 years in the Medical Department. He was a member of Knights of Columbus St. Thomas Council #137, American Legion Merrillville Post #430 and was an active amateur radio operator belonging to the Lake Co. Amateur Radio Association.
