Daniel Anton McDuffie was born in Atlanta, Ga. on August 29, 1876 to William Bradford McDuffie and Amelia Muff McDuffie. His father was also born in Atlanta, the son of Scotch Irish immigrants. His mother was the daughter of German immigrants from the Weimar Republic.
He was married May 27, 1895 to Jessie Anna Turner of Lithia Springs, Ga. They lived in Lithia Springs and Rome, Ga. a few years before moving to Willis Mill Rd. in Southwest Atlanta.
Mr. McDuffie was in construction work and at the time they moved to Atlanta he was working on the building of the reformatory below Hapeville - where the Crown Road Post Office is now located. He would walk from his home to work every day and his route took him through East Point. Thinking to better himself, he purchased land on what is now Connally Dr. (formerly Chattahoochee Ave.) in East Point and built a home. He would work all through the day at his job and the only time he could work on building his home was during the night. His wife Jessie would hold the oil lantern for him to work by. The home was recently demolished in 2009.
In 1907, he built a home on the corner of Semmes and Spring in East Point and the family lived there until they built on the corner of Church and Neeley where Mr. and Mrs. McDuffie lived until their deaths.
Mr. McDuffie organized the first fire department in East Point and often told of the old reel type truck they (the city) purchased at that time. These trucks were pulled by men.
He also served as Mayor of East Point in 1921-22, served on the school board 1918-19 and on the city council for several years. He was appointed as the first Building Inspector for Fulton County in 1932 and was later appointed Building Inspector for East Point.
He was a forth generation Mason and a member of the First Methodist Church of East Point.
