Torpedoman 1st Class, US Navy. Parents were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Kimbrel. Completed high school and two years of college at Northern Oklahoma Junior College, Tonkawa, OK. Member of Tonkawa Chapter of De Molay. Enlisted February 12, 1935. Attended training schools at Coronado Island, California and Newport, Rhode Island. On board the USS Roper on the first mid-winter cruise by the Navy to Alaska in 1936. On board the USS Hammann (DD-412) on its round-trip cruise from Brooklyn, New York to the north coast of South America, as well as escort duty in the North Atlantic during 1941, and participation in the Battle of the Coral Sea May 8, 1942, in the Pacific. The crew of the USS Hammann (DD-412)were recognized for bravery while helping to rescue the crew of the sinking and burning USS Lexington at Coral Sea, and also for their rescue work at the side of the fatally crippled USS Yorktown at the Battle of Midway. While tending to the Yorktown, USS Hammann (DD-412)was struck by a torpedo from an enemy raider and sank.

Berlyn was awarded the Silver Star posthumously on December 16, 1942.
