Walter G. Smith, age 81, of Great Bend, formerly of Hop Bottom, died unexpectedly Sunday at home.

His wife is the former Phyllis Warner.

Born September 14, 1928, in Hop Bottom he was the son of the late Floyd and Cora Henry Smith.

He was the former chief of police for the Hop Bottom and Factoryville police departments, was a Constable for Susquehanna County, and was a truck driver for Eastern Freightways and Huey Trucking in Tunkhannock. He also worked at the Harford Fair for many years.

Surviving are two daughters: Jessie and husband Douglas Thorn, Thompson; and Rose and husband David Williams, Kingsley; four sons: Ivan Sr. and wife Sandy Smith; Clifford Smith, and Ernest Sr. and wife Debbie Smith, all of New Milford; and Vernon Smith of Kingsley. Three sisters: June Keller, Hop Bottom; JoAnn Whalen, Port Crane NY, and Emma and husband Ernest Wilbur of Nicholson; three brothers: Glenn and wife Mathida Smith, Georgia; Donald and wife Marjorie Smith, New Milford, and Earl Smith of Hop Bottom; 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a son Walter Gene Smith, six brothers Floyd, Kenneth, Roy, Elmer, Charles, and Albert Smith, and four sisters: Edna Raub, Elizabeth Benson, and Bertha and Ruth Smith. His first wife Helen (Bennett) Cameron.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State St., Nicholson, with services by Rev. Ralph Christianson, pastor of the First Universalist Church of Brooklyn.

Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Kingsley.

Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
