Philadelphia naturalist who worked at the Academy of Natural Sciences for 51 years. Principally an ornithologist, was President of the American Ornithologists' Union for three years and edited their journal 'The Auk' for 25 years. Wrote 'Bird Studies at Old Cape May.' In 1890, along with six other local birders, founded the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC). Was also a noted botanist and wrote 'The Plants of Southern New Jersey.'
