I have some additional information and suggestions to enhance this memorial. According to the 1900 and 1910 censuses and Floyd’s U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 information, he was born Floyd Ray Barton in Knox County, Illinois. Floyd’s father, Almon H. Barton, married Floyd’s mother, Clara E. Goforth on June 7, 1890 in Knox County, Illinois but she died on March 6, 1900 in Reno County, Kansas. The 1900 census for Reno County, Kansas was enumerated on June 7, 1900 so Floyd never appears in a census with his biological mother. In 1900, it show Floyd as being born in Illinois but if it were not for his parents marriage record in Knox County, Illinois and Floyd’s U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 information stating he was born in Knox County, Illinois we would not be aware of where he was born. Floyd W. Barton married Lottie Pearl Gish some time between 1915 and June 5, 1918 because in Floyd’s U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 information he lists his nearest relative as “Lottie Pear Barton – wife.” Even when Floyd married Lottie and registered for the U.S., World War I Draft, he was listed as Floyd Ray Barton. It isn’t until the 1930 and 1940 censuses where we see Floyd W. Barton instead of Floyd Ray Barton. I have no idea of when or why he switched from Floyd Ray Barton to Floyd W. Barton. Even his Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014 lists his just as “Floyd Barton.” Clearly from looking at the photo of his gravestone he wanted to be called Floyd W. Barton. I am just guessing that Floyd either had two middle names or just did not like Ray and changed it to whatever the “W” represents.
