Lace joined the Tennessee Calvary in 1864 and he survived the war.

He and his wife were both living in the 1910 census.

In the 1920 census, his wife is a widow.

Per his Civil War Service record, he was born in Yancey County, and lived in Mitchell County, when he enlisted at Strawberry Plains, TN on 23 Sep 1863. He was 26 years old at the time.

He was mustered into Co. B, 13th Tennessee Cavalry on 31 May, 1864 and given a $100 bounty.

He was captured at Bulls Gap, TN on 19 Nov 1864. He was paroled at James River, VA on 22 Feb, 186 and was sent to Camp Chase, OH, before rejoining his regiment on 15 Mar 1865.

He mustered out of the 13th Tennessee Cavalry on 5 Sep 1865.

He returned to Mitchell County, and married Cester E. Stewart, daughter of Jackson and Elizabeth Howell Stewart. They lived in Bakersville, Mitchell County, where Lace farmed and Cester kept the home

Conscripted with his brother Samuel Carson Byrd at gunpoint to serve in the Confederacy, but deserted after about 6 months near Big Gap Creek, TN. They fled to Hampton, TN and met Daniel Ellis, famed Union Pilot, who guided them to Strawberry Plains, TN to join up with the 13th Regiment TN Volunteer Cavalry.
