He is eldest son of John Doherty Ritchie and Catherine Yates Ritchie, husband of Arminda Caroline Hall Ritchie. They had nine children.

William J.J. Ritchie, seventy-seven years old and one of the pioneers of Buchanan co., died at the family residence at Willow Brook, ten miles southeast of the city, at 5:30 o'clock this morning. He was born near the farm where he died and had lived in this county all his life. A widow, three sons and three daughters survive him. The children are Mrs. James Dunlap, St. Joseph; Mrs. Wm. McCauley and Mrs. Henry McCauley, of Sparta; W.W. and J.D. Ritchie of Kansas City and James Ritchie of Willow Brook. The funeral will be at Willow Brook at 3 p.m. Sunday. Interment in Yates cemetery.

Wm. J.J. Ritchie was a Quarter Master Serg. Co. E 12th Reg. Mo. Cavalry Vol. enlisted July 21, 1863 at St. Joseph, Mo. Was discharged Jan. 4, 1866, served 1 yr. 5 mos. and 17 days.
