Widow of William McCauley Is Dead
Mrs. Harriett Catherine McCauley, widow of William McCauley and a member of a prominent pioneer Buchanan County family, died this morning at her home on Sparta road, six miles south of St. Joseph. She would have been 81 years old next month.
Mrs. McCauley was a lifelong resident of the Sparta and Willow Brook communities. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Ritchie and was born at Willow Brook. When she was 16, she was married at her parents' home to William McCauley, a neighborhood boy, and they started housekeeping on the McCauley farm at Sparta.
For the past quarter of a century, Mr. McCauley, who died last May at the age of 86, and his wife occupied the Colonial style house on the east side of Sparta road.
For many years, Mrs. McCauley had been an active member of the Sparta Homemakers' Club and the Sparta Methodist Ladies' Aid Society. For 23 years, prior to 1941, Mr. and Mrs. McCauley had made an annual trip to Hot Springs, Ark.
Mrs. McCauley is survived by a brother, William Ritchie, St. Joseph, and several nieces and nephews. The body is at Meierhoffer's mortuary and Thursday afternoon will be moved to the family home.
Services will be Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Sparta Methodist Church, the Rev. L. C. Maggart of Shelbina, Mo., officiating. Interment will be in the Sparta Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Charles Brown, Frank Schaub, S.S. Connett, Frank Connett, Charles Mays and G. E. Brumbaugh.
