The son of Pheletus Campbell and Estaline Mattoon, Clarence was married to Emma Rothwell. He was a detective for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and they were the parents of 11 children.

Clarence died at the Missouri Pacific Hospital from prostate cancer and exhaustion. At the time of his death, he was 81 years, 6 months and 22 days old.

Clarence was buried next to his wife, Emma, on 20 Jan 1945. She passed away in 1944.
