Hary Gordon Arritt, 86, of 700 Potts Creek Road, died Thursday evening at his residence. He was born November 9, 1921 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Harry A. and Rebecca Helms Arritt.

Mr. Arritt served out country during World War II with the United States Army. he was a 22 year Veteran of the Virginia National Guard and was a member of the Covington American Legion Post # 4. He retired in 1984 as a beaterman with Westvaco, Inc. after 38 years of employment. Mr. Arritt was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church where he was a former head usher and always enjoyed working with the ladies in the kitchen for Tuesday Fellowship Dinners. For several years Gordon volunteered with the Christmas Mother Program, helping with anything that needed to be done.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Huff Arritt, on February 13, 2008 and also by two sisters, Christine Jordan and Margaret McNeal.

Surviving are his daughter, Cindy Morow of Covington; two granddaughters, Robin and Scott Morgan of Greenville, SC and Karen and Danny Bennett of Palm Harbor, FL; five great-grandchildren, Leighton Morgan; Zachary Morgan, Lucas Morgan; Hunter Bennett and Keyleigh Bennett.
