The Naples Record
Naples, Ontario County, New York.
Friday, October 6, 1882

Died, at his home in Naples, N. Y., at 10 o'clock on Saturday night, September 30, 1882, David Briggs, aged 74 years and 3 months.

Mr. Briggs was one of our best known older residents, having an extended acquaintance and a large circle of relatives. He was born in Milo, Yates county, and married his first wife there, a Miss Eliza Asprill. About twenty-nine years ago they came to Naples and settled in Garlingbouse on the farm which he still owned at the time of his death. With his strong bands and industrious habits he began to prosper, and had accumulated a fine property years before he died. After paying for the farm on which he settled, he bought the red house farm near the village, where Wm. Wolfanger now resides, and lived there several years; and later in life he bought the place on Cohocton street, where he died. Nine children grew up to manhood and womanhood, of whom all but one, John, are living, and all but one attended his funeral. While living in the red house his wife died, and some years after he married Margaret Polyer, who survives him. Mr. Briggs had hardly known what it was to suffer until this last illness, having been a large, strong, healthy man and for the few months preceding this attack he had been unusually well. But taken with a low fever and hemorrhage of the bowels setting in, both external and internal, he sank rapidly. He was aware of his approaching end and was conscious to the last, passing quietly away. He was a member of the M. E. church, and died in the Christian faith. The funeral was on Monday at 2 p. m., and the house was filled with relatives and neighbors. There were present, his brothers, Judge Wm. Briggs, of Penn Yan, George Briggs, of Milo, and John Briggs, of Cohocton, his sister, Mrs. Aaron Bartholomew, of Naples, another sister, Mrs. Sands, was not able to be present. His sons, William, Delos, Charles, Clark and Frank, were also present with their families; and two daughters, Mrs. Ann Stephens and Mrs. Eva Sherman, of Wayland, besides a great number of grandchildren, nephews and nieces. The oldest daughter, Mrs. Mary Rumsey of Honeoye Falls, was unable to come. In the absence of his pastor, Rev. Messrs Bradbury, of Wayland, and Fuller, of this village, officiated. A choir of singers from the village assisted. The remains were interred in the Garlingbouse cemetery.
