Babette (Betty) Alvina Gutzmer was born on a farm near Lane, SD in Jerald County on Oct. 12, 1906, to Otto August Gutzmer, Sr. and Babette M.(Spillman) Gutzmer.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church at Lane. Because of drought and hardships the family moved to Missouri, Montana and back again to Jerauld Co. to homestead a farm sometime between late 1912 or early 1913. She was home-schooled and also attended country schools in Ziebach and Jerauld Co.'s, where she completed her education through the 8th grade.
In 1927 the family moved to the Old Fee Place in Sanborn Co., on Feb. 16, 1928 her mother passed away, two days after giving birth to brother Walter. Betty and sister, Hilda, took care of the new baby and the younger sisters, Erna and Florence, with the help of Papa's guidance. She worked for the Bechtold family in Sioux Falls, which allowed her to attended Nettleton College.
She marrried Martin A. Luhrs, March 27, 1932 at Woonsocket, SD. He preceded her in death March 15, 1976.
In 1933, Betty and Martin offered to care for 5 year old, Walter. They cared for him through his high school junior year.
From the time of her marriage to Martin in 1932 until she moved to Watertown in the spring of 1993, she lived 61 years on their farm in Lincoln Co. near Shindler. In Watertown, she lived with a very special nephew, about a year and half before moving into the Watertown Hi-Rise Apartments in October, 1994.
Because of poor health she moved to the United Retirement Center in Brookings, August 1998.
She was a charter member of the Eastside Lutheran Church. For many years she was a member of the Springdale Home Extension Club. She was a self-taught artist and loved painting and drawing birds, landscapes, flower and fruit arrangements. She loved gardening, crocheting, singing and playing the piano.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Marie Gutzmer Schroeder, And two brothers, Albert and Otto, Jr. Gutzmer.
