"Murdock" was how Mordecai S Graves' name was misspelled when he was in the Civil War. He was a member of NC Troops 18th Regiment, Co B. He was marched across NC and VA to Winchester, VA with the Confederate Troops of the 18th. We know that he died "in camp of disease". Many soldiers are buried there in mass graves. No record is found there of a tombstone for Mordecai or "Murdock" Graves. A memorial has been prepared on Findagrave/Winchester, VA for him even tho we don't know the grave site.
He had married Mary E ? about 1858. In the 1860 census he is listed as the husband of Mary E Graves and the father of Virginia B Graves, age l. He also was the father of Lucy E Graves born 186l.
There are records showing the remainder of his Civil War pay being awarded to his wife with Nathaniel Graves, his father present.
His wife Mary married c1867 William Hight, but her children Virginia and Lucy lived with their grandparents until their death and then with their aunt Mary Rowan in Bladen and later Wilmington.
