SPRINGFIELD - Donald "Don" Mapes of Springfield died at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, at St. John's Hospital.

He was born March 26, 1918, in Horton, Kansas, the son of the late Justin and Alice (Lyons) Mapes.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine. They were married in 1942 in Yuma, Arizona. He leaves 2 sons, Donald "Scott" (wife, Donna) of Springfield and Kevin Dallas of Wichita, Kansas and a beloved granddaughter, Diedre Maxine. His brother, Dutch, died the same hour in California.

During World War II he served 6 years, 2 of them overseas. Until his retirement he was the owner of United Rent- Alls Stores, Inc. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield. Don and his wife enjoyed 32 seasons of wintering in Sun City West, Arizona.

Services are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd., Springfield, where memorial services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Lonnie H. Lee will officiate. The family will greet relatives and friends from 9 a.m. until time of the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Private inurnment will take place at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield.

Memorials may be sent to Westminster Presbyterian Church or Habitat for Humanity in Springfield.
