Mrs. J.R. Arnold

Lorinda Messinger was born at Halifax near Columbus, Ohio, in 1835 and at the age of ten years, moved with her parents to Schoolcraft, Michigan. She was married to John R. Arnold in May, 1853, and to this union were born seven children, two boys and five girls, the oldest boy and girl dying in infancy. In 1883 she moved to Nebraska with her family, settling on a farm seven miles from Blue Hill, where she experienced all the hardships of the early settler. Her husband died in Dec., 1893, and she remained on the home place until a few years ago, when she took up her residence in Bladen. ___________________ . Two daughters ______________________ and Mrs. L.E. Warner, have preceded her to the great beyond. There remains to mourn her death two daughters, Mrs. V.S. Hall and Miss Jessie Arnold, of Bladen, and one son, Fremont Arnold of Portland Oregon, besides several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Language and its words are unsatisfactory means of conveying an appreciation of a true Christian life. Mrs. Arnold not only understood but applied the spirit of Christian living in every sense of the word. First as the oldest sister in a large family, shoulder all the responsibilities of caring for her motherless brothers and sisters; then as a wife and mother doing her duty to a large family and bearing all crosses with a perfect resignation to the will of her Heavenly Father. Nor was she lacking as a true neighbor. Friends say that to know her was to love her and her sweet disposition and willingness to lend a helping hand or speak a kind word are sufficient proof to bear out their loving comments.

Death was kind to Grandma Arnold, as the home folks are wont to speak of her, causing no suffering or pain. She died at 10:50 Monday evening June 25, a stroke of apoplexy being the immediate cause of her death. It was her 82nd birthday and the afternoon and evening was spent with her children, making a truly happy ending to a beautiful life.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. G.W. Hummel of Red Cloud, at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock and interment was made in Plainview cemetery.
