Oliver Lewellyn Andrews was accidentally shot and mortally wounded by Charles William Rosenstiel on July 27, 1920, in a case of mistaken identity. Rosenstiel felt that a Mr. E. A. Capen had been paying inappropriate attention to his wife and set out to murder him. He mistook Oliver for this Mr. Capen.

Oliver, who at the time was a collections employee at the First National Bank in Wichita, Kansas was on his way to work. He was confronted by Rosenstiel on the street and Oliver informed Rosenstiel that he had the wrong person, but Rosenstiel fired the gun from inside his coat pocket. The bullet hit Oliver in the abdomen and lodged in the muscles of his back near his spine. Andrews was able to walk to the Tilford drugstore inside the Hotel Lassen and seek aid.

Oliver was taken to Saint Francis hospital where he remained for seven weeks. Initially there was hope of his ultimate recovery. But septicemia developed and Oliver died Sunday morning, September 11, 1920 at St. Francis hospital in Wichita. His wife was present at the time of his death. His brother Vernon Andrews arrived later that day.

Oliver was born October 1, 1888, in Powhattan, Brown County, Kansas. He graduated from the Kansas School of Engineering in 1912. After graduation he moved to Morenci, Arizona where he worked for a copper mining company for three years. During the threatening hostilities with Mexico, he served a year on the border in the Arizona National Guard. After his return to civilian life, Oliver entered the banking firm of Gila Valley Trust Company in Morenci, Arizona where he worked for two years. He then moved to Los Angeles, where he remained for a few months before moving to Wichita, Kansas about a year before the shooting. Oliver and his family were preparing to move back to Arizona at the time of his death.

Oliver left behind his wife; Genevieve (Huffman) Andrews of two years and their 18 month old daughter; Martha Jane Andrews. His wife was born about 1891 in Kansas, the daughter of George G. and Martha A. Huffman. His daughter Martha Jane was born August 6, 1919, in Wichita, Kansas. She married a gentleman by the last name of Stratton and died September 11, 2007. Her last address of record with the S.S. Administration was in Longmont, Boulder County, Colorado.

Other survivors were his father, Robert Andrews; brothers David Andrews, Vernon Milo Andrews and Dr. Charles Andrews; sister Mary Andrews. He was predeceased by his mother Jane who died in 1916.

Rosenstiel plead guilty and was convicted of third degree manslaughter and was to serve an indeterminate sentence of one to three years. He was taken to the penitentiary in May 1921 but was paroled by Governor Davis in February 1923.
