Hollis Lee Ashburn, 89, a resident of the Estates of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

He was born April 16, 1916, in Monterey, Tenn., the son of Robert Cantrel Ashburn and Easter Francis Tudor Ashburn.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corp. in the 895th Air Engineering Squadron.

Mr. Ashburn retired from Union Carbide Corp. Y-12, where he was a machinist. He was a member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Faith Masonic Lodge No. 756, where he was a 32nd Degree Mason, and the International Association of Machinists. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mrs. Ashburn was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mattie Edith Ashburn, on July 9, 2004.

He is survived by his son, Philip Scott Ashburn and wife Mary Ashburn of Oak Ridge; daughters, Sandra Stair and husband John E. Stair of Clinton, and Cathy Walton O'Connor and husband Thomas S. O'Connor of Knoxville; sister, Robbie Weinel and husband Dr. William Weinel of Wilmington, N.C.; five grandchildren, Scott Ashburn and wife Carmela, and Darek Ashburn and wife, Tracy, all of Oak Ridge; Nick Walton of Farragut; Holly Stair Webb and husband, Jeremy of Clinton; and John E. Stair Jr. of Cookeville; and two great-grandchildren, Robert Orlando Ashburn of Oak Ridge, and Riley James Webb of Clinton.

The family would like to extend their gratitude and thanks to all his special friends and the staff of the Estates of Oak Ridge for the friendship and care given to their father.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Vernon Sansom officiating. The interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 127 Lafayette Drive, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from noon until 2 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary.
