As far as the grave marker goes it was requested by his son Chauncy David Nix from the federal government at or about the time of his death as he was eligible for the stone due to his Civil War service. John Nix was injured at or around Petersburg and lost a leg to cannon fire and became a "prisoner nurse" while recuperating at the Richmond Federal Army Hospital which skills he used to earn a living with after returning to the area around Bear Wallow/Bat Cave/Chimney Rock, North Carolina.
