Dorthea Cremilla McCarty Johnston, daughter of Edward Albert and Lillie May Butler McCarty was born on December 4, 1910 in Cora, Woods County, Oklahoma. Her parents moved to Colfax County, New Mexico in 1915.

About 1925 her family moved first to Arkansas and then to Missouri. She was a member of the 1927 graduating class in Mentor, Missouri. The family returned to New Mexico in 1928. She and Robert Buckner Johnston were married in 1932. They were longtime residents of the Mofax Community. They moved to Texline, Texas in 1964 and then to Clayton, New Mexico in 1968. She died at the age of 67 in Clayton, Union County, New Mexico.
