After the death of his mother, he and his siblings continued to live on the Daniel Payton homestead. Eventually, he purchased the Payton property which adjoined the McCarty homestead. Charlie provided a home for his two younger sisters and later a home for his, grandfather, Jesse Butler, and his uncle, George Fredrick McCarty, during their declining years.
Charlie was a longtime resident of the Mofax Community. He died at the age of 82 in Clayton, Union County, New Mexico. He was buried in the Mofax Cemetery on April 14, 1987.
