Rev. Heman Swift Colton was the son of Jonathan Strong Colton and Elizabeth 'Betsy' Donaldson and the husband of Elvira Hart. He was a noted Congregational minister. At great risk to himself he was one of the operators of the Underground Railroad in Kendall County during slavery times. The Underground Railroad provided assistance to fugitive slaves from the South who were seeking freedom in Canada.
