WILLIAM HUMPHREYS
William Humphreys was born May 6, 1844, near Portsmouth, Ohio, and passed away at his home in Oakley on January 25, 1941, after a week's illness with pneumonia, at the age of 96 years, 8 months and 19 days.
His boyhood was spent near Portsmouth and at the age of 18 he enlisted in the Union Army and served two years and 10 months in the Civil War. He was honorable discharged on June 20, 1865, at Knoxville, Tenn.
He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Caton on August 29, 1867. For many years they tenderly cared for Florence Hook whom they dearly loved and adopted as their own when she was 15 years of age.
In January, 1872, they moved to Lucas county, Iowa, where he spent the remainder of his life except for two years in Wayne county and a few years in Lacona, Iowa, where Mrs. Humphreys passed away in March, 1912.
In February, 1917, he was married to Mrs. Laura Parry, who passed away Jan. 15, 1930.
He has been an active member of the Mt. Zion Baptist church which he helped to erect and faithfully attended until he was called to his eternal home.
He leaves to mourn their loss his adopted daughter, Mrs. Florence Carpenter of LaGrande, Oregon; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren and several other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Andrew Thompson, of Casey, Iowa, were held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the Mt. Zion church and burial was in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
