The son of Michael & Juliann (Weaver) Overbaugh, in 1860 he was a farmer living in McSherrystown, Conewago Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, although that portion of the census no longer exists. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in New Oxford, Adams County, August 29, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 3 as a private with Co. C, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.
He married Josephine McSherry in 1875 and fathered Edward Francis (b. 12/21/76), Mary "Mamie" (b. 07/??/76 - married Charles Jacoby), Matilda Catherine (b. 09/26/81 - married John Timmins), Henry Sylvester "Harry" (b. 08/11/86), and Anna J. (b. 12/??/93 - married Eugene Pohlman). In 1890-1900, he lived in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County, but died in McSherrystown at age 77-6-5 from "mitral insufficiency" with "anemia, arteriosclerosis & senility" contributing factors.
