TOM PRATT DIED IN CITY TUESDAY: EVELETH'S FATHER OF CURLING SUCCUMBS FROM EFFECTS OF PARALYTIC STROKE TWO YEARS AGO
Tom Pratt, the father of curling in Eveleth, died at his home in the city Tuesday, January 8, 1929 at 4 o'clock at the age of 79 years. The deceased suffered a stroke of paralysis two years ago which had confined him to his home since that time although he suffered no physical pain and retained his full mental faculties until within a day before his death.
The deceased had been a resident of the city for more than 20 years, retiring as an engineer for the Duluth & Iron Range railroad three years ago. Previous to coming to this section he was an engineer for the Great Northern and also served in the same capacity on eastern roads.
Tom Pratt had been actively interested in the game of curling for 65 years first becoming interested when a lad of 12 or 13 at his boyhood home in Canada. Shortly after he arrived in Eveleth his enthusiasm awakened an interest in the game in the city and the Eveleth Curling club was formed, with him serving as its first president. Even during his illness his interest never abated and when an important series was on the local sheets arrangements were made so that he could be present to witness it. A friend of Bob Dunbar's of many years standing, the latter never failed to visit him daily during his two years' illness.
The deceased was born in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada and his wife died fifteen years ago. For many years a sister-in-law, Miss Eliza Feir, has made her home with him. Survivors include two sons, Best and John Pratt of Chicago, who arrived yesterday, one daughter, Mrs. R.W. Jones of Minneapolis, two brothers, Dave Pratt of Midland, Ontario, and George Pratt of Toronto; and three sisters, Mrs. A. Crothers, Midland, Mrs. A. Johnston, Perth, Ontario, and Mrs. A. Ferguson, Cobourg.
The body will lie in state at Peterson Undertaking parlors this afternoon and evening and tomorrow morning. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock at the Presbyterian Church under the auspices of the Eveleth Masonic lodge of which the deceased was a member with Rev. D.D. Jansen officiating. Burial will be made at the Virginia [Greenwood] Cemetery beside the remains of his wife.
