Ruth Lackey Lambeth, age 87 of Marion died Monday January 12, 2009 at her residence. A native of McDowell County, Mrs. Lambeth was born in Old Fort, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Zeb L. Lackey and the late Agnes Beach Lackey. She was also preceded in death by her husband Robert Glenn Lambeth; five brothers, Paul W. Lackey, Earl A. Lackey, Garland Ray Lackey, Howard L. Lackey and Carroll D. Lackey; two sisters, Doris Lackey Smith and Barbara J. Lackey.
Mrs. Lambeth was a dedicated public servant in local government serving as a clerk in the Register of Deeds office beginning 1942 and then as Register of Deeds of McDowell County from 1947 through 1990 except for one 4 year term.
She is survived by two brothers, Zebulon L. (Buck) Lackey, Jr. and wife Margaret of Asheville and James L. Lackey of Sacramento, California; two sisters, Edith Melton Suttles of Old Fort and Elsie Good and husband Edward of Marion; one stepson Henry Lambeth and one stepdaughter Glynn Lambeth Jackson; six step-grandchildren, Robert Giles, Elizabeth Giles Loftin, Neal Giles Hill, Lillian Giles Link, Michael Lambeth and Leslie Lambeth; one great grandchild and a number of nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday January 16, 2009 in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home, Marion, NC with the Rev. Chuck Tripp officiating. The family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Hospice of McDowell County 575 Airport Road Marion, NC 28752. Westmoreland Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family.
