Mrs. Edith Lackey Melton Suttles, age 98, of Old Fort, died on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Mountain Ridge Wellness Center in Black Mountain following several years of declining health. Edith was the oldest of twelve children born to the late Z. L. Lackey, Sr. and Agnes Beach Lackey. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and was retired from Old Fort Finishing. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Edward D. “Buck” Melton and Floyd S. Suttles; a son, David E. Melton; six brothers, Carroll, Earl, Ray, H. L. (Sam), Paul and James Lackey; three sisters, Barbara J. Lackey, Doris L. Smith and Ruth L. Lambeth; and her sister-in-law, Claire Lackey.

She is survived by a daughter, Rachel Melton Newton and her husband Richard of Old Fort; a son, Albert M. Melton and his wife Marie of Arden, two grandchildren, Lisa Melton Morgan of Charlotte and Scott Melton and his wife Linda of Old Fort; and one great-grandson, Jacob Thomas Melton and his mother Candi, both of Winston-Salem.

She is also survived by a stepson, Ray Suttles and his wife Loretta of Wharton, NJ; three step-grandchildren, Damien Suttles and his wife Kathryn of Budd Lake, NJ, Shannon Massee of Aurora, IL, and Heather Hingtgen and her husband Terry of Cedar Rapids, IA; and four step-great-grandchildren, Kevin Suttles, Damien Massee, and Justin and Jayce Hingtgen.

Also surviving are her brother, Z. L. (Buck) Lackey, Jr. and his wife Margaret of Asheville; her sister, Elsie Lackey Good and her husband Edward of Marion, and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lackey of Rice, VA.

A service in celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Service and Cremations in Old Fort with Rev. Bill Balcom officiating and the eulogy given by Ray Suttles. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Bethlehem Community Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her first husband, Buck.
