The funeral for Herman J. Hvinden, 84, of Maddock will be held Fri., Nov. 26 at 11 a.m. at the Viking Lutheran Church, rural Maddock. Interment will be in the church cemetery in block 2 plot 34. He died Nov. 20, 1993 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby.
Rev. Lori & Rev. Brad Keyser-Boswell will officiate. Sheila Erickson will be organist & Arlyss Bergrud soloist. Pallbearers will be grandsons James Hvinden, Mark Hvinden, Steven Hvinden, Dwight Stenberg, & Teran Hermanson, Jacob Hoffner & Aaron McFerran. All friends & neighbors attending the service will be considered honorary pallbearers. The Nelson Funeral Home of Maddock is in charge of arrangements.
Herman Julius Hvinden was born Oct. 22, 1909 in Viking Township of Benson County to Christian & Christine Lovlien Hvinden. He was educated in the Viking Township School & at Maddock. He married Cecelia Bergsgaard Dec. 17, 1930 at Minnewaukan. They started farming in 1931 on the Carl Nelson farm in Viking Township. In 1944 they moved to the Christ Hvinden farm, also in Viking Township. In 1951 he purchased the S&H Service Station in Maddock & operated that with his farm until he sold the station to his son-in-law, Donald Stenberg, & the farm to his son, Curtis. He also operated a bulk fuel delivery business, which he sold in 1975. He entered the Haaland Home in Rugby in 1976 after suffering a stroke & later the Heart of America Medical Center's Long Term Care Unit. Cecelia Hvinden died March 12, 1978.
He was a lifelong member of the Viking Lutheran Church, being baptized & confirmed there & had also held several church offices. He served as road boss of Viking Township for 17 years. He served as chairman of the Benson County Republican Party for 4 years, & vice chairman for 4 years. He was a member of the Maddock Commercial Club for 25 years & was a charter member of the Maddock Kiwanis Club. He was also a charter member of the Maddock Sons of Norway Lodge. He was a member of Fort Totten Trails, Inc. & had served as vice president of that organization.
Survivors include a son, Curtis Hvinden & his wife, Lillian, of Maddock; a daughter, Delores Stenberg of Maddock; 7 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; & a brother, Oscar Hvinden of Maddock.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Agnes Hvinden Arne; & a brother, Elmer Hvinden.
