Robert Sloan Fullerton was born March 1, 1824, in Pike County, Missouri. He went to California, via Panama, in 1850 and engaged in mining in Eldorado County, California, until 1851 when he returned to Missouri. In 1852 he traveled overland in an immigrant wagon train with "Uncle Billy" Watts and sister, Nancy Jane. He settled where the city of Scappoose, Oregon, is now located. Robert took up a donation land claim in 1853, six miles south of St. Helens in Columbia County, Oregon, where he lived until 1871. He sold out in that year and bought a ranch near Warren in Columbia County. Robert married Almyra "Ellen" Post on December 2, 1856, in the home of Uncle Billy Watts; they were married by William Jolly, a gospel minister. Almyra was born July 6, 1842, at Preemption in Mercer County, Illinois. She was the daughter of John D. Post and Katherine Shippey. She had come across country on the same wagon train as Robert in 1852. Robert was a farmer and stock raiser and one of Oregon's honored pioneers. He was always a staunch champion of education and served as a school board member. His influence was ever exerted in behalf of civic, intellectual and moral progress. The Fullerton home in Oregan was the meeting place for all Christian gatherings in the early settlement of the country north of Portland. .
Robert died April 3, 1900, in Warren and is buried in Bayview Cemetery. [1] Almyra was not enumerated on the 1870 or 1880 census with Robert.
