David Higbee was born in Upper Saint Clair Township, Allegheny County, the son of Obadiah and Sarah (Philips) Higbee. After teaching school for a short time, he took over the responsibility of his father's farm. He lived with and took care of his parents until their deaths in 1865 and 1866. His chief occupation was farming and stockraising, principally sheep.

He was an elder in the Peters Creek Christian Church, which was formed in the 1830s and was very important to him. He worshipped there for about 50 years, 40 years of which he was an elder. (This cemetery was originally the churchyard of Peters Creek Christian Church, also known as Disciples Church, so this was once the location of the church building as well as the cemetery.)

He first married Elizabeth Boyer (1830-1862), daughter of Samuel and Mary (Beyer-Boyer) Boyer of Peters Township, Washington County, on November 13, 1851. They had four children:

Mary Higbee (1852-79)
Sarah (Higbee) Scoles (1855-1921)
Anna Elizabeth Higbee (1857-1859)
Obadiah Carson Higbee (1859-disappeared)

After Elizabeth's death, David married her sister, Lucinda Ann Blackmore Boyer, on August 30, 1865. They had six children:

Elizabeth (Higbee) McAnulty (1868-1937)
John Newton Higbee (1869-1946)
Della L. (Higbee) Kerr (1871-1952)
Ella "Dora" (Higbee) Moseley (1873-1968)
Amy V. (Higbee) McVicker (1875-1961)
David Fordyce Higbee (1880-1956)

David Higbee died on February 16, 1899, in Venetia Pennsylvania.
