Johnnie was born sometime after his parents moved from Hobart to the Capitol Hill area of Oklahoma City. He married Julia Flemming in 1931 and they had two sons. Johnnie and Julia owned and operated cafes in the Oklahoma City area for many years. His sister, Virginia, said he had a beautiful operatic tenor voice and was also an excellent violinist; every time she would hear an aria he'd sung or a violin piece he'd played, she would remember what an excellent musician he was. Johnnie loved flowers, particularly orchids, and for a time was president of the local orchid society.
