Leonard, who was born in Oklahoma City, moved with three brothers and a sister to Galax in 1922 after the death of their mother. He married Bitha Belle Alderman in 1930 and they had three sons, one of whom lived only a brief time. Leonard owned an automobile sales dealership for a time before entering into the business of antiques. His shop was just a few blocks from the home he and Bitha shared for many years on the main highway through Galax. Leonard, who had a great sense of humor, was an active member of his church and a Gideon.
