MIGUELA GONZALES y LIBUNAO was a middle child in the large family of Nicolasa Libunao y Ligon and Martin Gonzales. She was the only member of her family to marry outside of her race and the only one of her generation to move from rural living in the Provinces to urban living in Manila. She was self-educated, had a deep Love of God and family, had a natural gift for being a good business woman, and was the Family Historian despite her lack of formal education.

She married James William Stevenson (aka: Nephi Joseph Stevenson) in a marriage "arranged" by her Mother. James was the son of Nephi Porter Stevenson and Louisa Stewart (both of UT, USA). With the blessing of his Mother-in-law, James eloped with Miguela. They had a Civil Ceremony on Sept. 3, 1907 at San Miguel, Bulacan Province. He was 42; she was 18. A religious Ceremony of Marriage was held on January 7, 1915 at Capas, Tarlac Province, Philippines. Their children were born in Gallano, LaUnion Province.

About 1921, they moved to Manila where James had a two-story brick home built in San Juan Hills on the outskirts of Manila. In 1926, the family moved into their new home at 34 Guevara Ave., San Juan, Rizal (later 300 Guevara Ave.). The home was so well built and in such a strategic area, that years later (during WW II) the first floor was taken over by the Japanese and used as their Command Center. Miguela, her grown children and their families occupied the second floor.

Miguela and James raised six children including Florence Kellogg, the daughter of his dear friend Almer X Kellogg who died when Florence was just 10 years old. Miguela raised the standard of living of her Gonzales relatives by bringing many of her nieces and nephews to Manila to be educated. She and her husband were married for 28 years. She was widowed at the young age of 47 when James died on April 10, 1936 of typhoid fever. His ashes were buried at Cementerio del Norte in Baguio City and later moved to Loyola Memorial Park in Quezon City, Metro Manila where Miguela would be buried with him 54 years later.

Miguela loved to travel. In 1955 (at age 66), she made her first trip (by plane) to the US. What an adventure for someone born in 1888! She had not seen her children for 10 years since they left the Islands in 1945. Her son Jim had suffered a stroke, and her daughter Minnie was pregnant with her last child. Miguela learned English during her first years in the States by listening to the radio (a hand-held radio with a very heavy battery pack attached to it). She made numerous trips between the Islands and the States and also visited FL to see her adopted daughter Florence and to visit the Space Center at Cape Canaveral. She was in CA for the Weddings of her granddaughters in 1968 and the births of her great-grandchildren in 1969. Soon afterwards, she made her final trip back to the Islands and was there when her oldest daughter Louisa died on Oct. 18, 1972. Miguela was 84 at that time.

She preferred living in Baguio City which was a much cooler climate than Manila. She was lovingly cared for by her nieces and nephews. Miguela died of pneumonia on Dec. 6, 1990 at age 102. Her remains were taken to Manila to be buried with her husband. She had lived a very full and productive life. Two of her daughters (Louisa and Nellie and their respective husbands Tony Isidro and Bert Kellogg) and Louisa's family are buried near Miguela.
