SPOUSE: Minnie married Arthur "Art" Frank Skiles, Jr. on August 11, 1940 at San Juan del Monte Church In San Juan, P.I. Art was born Nov. 7, 1913 P.I. and died Nov. 10, 1975 CA at age 62. He was the son of Arthur Franklin Skiles, Sr.
(1875 KY - 1963 CA) and Toribia de la Cruz (1883 P.I. - 1949 CA).

MINNIE received 12 years of education at Central School in Manila. She graduated in March 1933 as Class Valedictorian and went on to Business School. In 1937, she was baptized and her name was changed to Wilhelmina because Minnie wasn't considered a Christian name. On Aug. 11, 1939, she was engaged to Arthur Skiles. They were married a year later on her 27th Birthday.

On Dec. 31, 1941, the Japanese captured Manila. Despite the fact that Art was a guerilla fighter during those years and was imprisoned at Fort Santiago Military Prison for three months, Minnie and Art survived the Japanese Occupation and had three daughters.

With the liberation of the Philippines in Feb. 1945, Minnie and Art and their three daughters re-patriated to the United States. They departed Manila on April 10, 1945 aboard a troop transport ship (USS Eberle) and arrived at the Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro, CA) on May 2 after 3 weeks at sea. They remained in the Los Angeles area for the next 30 years until Art's death in 1975. Six more children were born during those years.

Minnie was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. On Aug. 11, 1975, she and Art celebrated their 35th Wedding Anniversary. Art had a stroke the following November at his 62nd Birthday Party and died of a brain aneurysm on Nov. 10, 1975. Minnie survived her husband by 23 years. She lived to see her children grow to adulthood and enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In 1990 at age 77, she fulfilled a dream of having her own home. She bought a brand new home in Sun City, Riverside County, CA. She called it her little "casita". She asked the Lord for five years to enjoy it. He gave her 8. This was the first time in her entire life that she had lived alone. She had relatively good health and enjoyed tending her garden especially her roses. She also did beautiful crochet work, and all her children and many of her relatives and friends were the recipients of lovely afghans and baby blankets. The mainstay of each day was her Bible-reading and prayer time which gave her great Peace and Joy. She had a very special relationship with her Heavenly Father.

She is buried side-by-side with her husband. Her devotion to her family and her abiding Love of her Heavenly Father are memorialized in the words she chose for her headstone:
"Love God ..... Love One Another".
