Alma Joseph Duersch, 90, of Alta, Wyo., passed away Oct. 7, 2009, at his daughter's home in Iona, Idaho, of complications from a stroke. He was under the care of Hands of Hope Hospice.

Alma was born Oct. 3, 1919, in Alta, Wyo., to Frederick Duersch and Lena Aeschbacher Duersch. He grew up on the family farm and attended grade school in Alta and high school in Driggs. In October 1940, he was called on a full-time LDS mission to the Texas-Louisiana Mission and was interviewed for this assignment by Apostle Charles A. Calais. He entered the mission field Dec. 12, 1940.

Alma's sister, Lil, introduced him to Nada Kunz at a dance in Cedron in 1944, and they were married Jan. 8, 1945, in the Logan, Utah, LDS Temple. They have lived and worked on their family farm in Alta since 1947.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served as Scoutmaster upon his return from the mission field, then as a stake missionary, ward clerk, Young Men president, bishop's counselor, Primary teacher, High Priest group leader and secretary, on the stake high council for eight years, and as an ordinance worker in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple from 1985 to 1999. Alma enjoyed fishing, sports, music, ball games and caring for his animals.

Survivors include his wife, Nada Duersch of Ammon; children, Nadine (Dave) Powell of Iona, Wanda (Doug) Mohr of Ammon, Robert (Lynette) Duersch of Pleasant View, Utah, Ronald (Linda) Duersch of Idaho Falls, Ann (Jeff) Saxton of Orem, Utah, Darlene (Orin) Pead of American Fork, Utah, and Nolan (Judy) Duersch of Sandy, Utah; sisters, Lillian (Arnon) Anthon of Smithfield, Utah, and Alice (Gene) Haycock of Providence, Utah; 49 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Fred, Henry, David and Edward; three sisters, Mary Duersch, Betty Denning and Barbara Schmitt; and a grandchild, Joy Nadine Powell.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road, with Bishop David Schwieder of the Iona LDS 3rd Ward officiating. The family will visit with friends from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Wood East Side. Burial will be in Pratt Cemetery in Alta, Wyo.
