OGDEN - Anna Barbara Duersch Schmitt, 84, died December 8, 2008, while undergoing treatments for cancer. She was born January 5, 1924, with her twin sister Betty, in Alta, WY, to Fred and Lena Aeschbacher Duersch. Barbara was raised with five brothers and four sisters on a farm in Driggs, ID. She moved to Ogden in 1942 and worked at HAFB where she met Carl J. Schmitt. They were married in 1945 and moved to New Kensington, PA after he was discharged from the Air Force. Together, they had five sons. After their divorce Barbara worked as a nurse's aide at the New Kensington Citizens General Hospital.

In 1972 she returned to Ogden and was a Certified Nursing Assistant on the coronary care and geriatric floors of McKay-Dee Hospital. Because of illness she had to give up nursing but was able to find employment working with flowers. She was the first woman hired by Ogden City Parks Dept; where she cared for greenhouses.

She also worked for Roy City Parks Dept. and retired in 1988 from Smitty's Garden Supply. Wherever she lived she grew beautiful flowers and a vegetable garden.

An active member of the LDS Church, she taught in the Primary, Sunday school and Relief Society. She was a long time member of the Ogden 8th ward and current member of the Ogden 3rd Ward.

She is survived by her sons Louis (Carol) of Gibsonia, PA, Ralph (Rebecca) of Sterling Heights, MI, Thomas of Turtle Creek, PA, Frank (Judy) of Ogden and Donald (Cindy) of Ogden; she is also survived by 22 grandchildren ; 31 great-grandchildren and a brother Alma (Nada) Duersch; sisters Lillian (Arnon) Anthon and Alice (Gene) Haycock.

Preceded in death by her parents Fred and Lena Duersch; four brothers and two sisters; Fred, Mary, Henry, David, Edward and Betty.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ogden 3rd Ward Chapel, 15th and Washington Blvd., Ogden. Friends may call on Friday, December 12th from 7 to 9 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd., Ogden and Saturday at the church from 9 to 9:45 a.m.

Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
