In the 1930 United States Census, Irene was living in her father's household with her brother William and her sister Marion. Their mother was absent, but their grandmother was present in the household. Postmarked Feb. 2, 1934, their grandmother, Mrs. Rosa Gibbons received mail from Room 43, State House, Boston, Massachusetts, addressed to Box 76, Russellville Road, Westfield, Massachusetts. Another letter dated Oct. 18, 1934, by The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Public Welfare, Division of Child Guardianship, concerning No. 19923, expressed that her granddaughter, Marion, was "still living in the same foster home, where she was placed when she first came to this department." Irene and William went to Belchertown State School. Irene was mainstreamed late in life. She always tried to keep track of her family and believed that Marion had married someone named Armstrong and was living in Springfield, Massachusetts, when she was interviewed at her mother's home in Westfield, Massachusetts. Irene had no children of her own, but wrote that she had married Orville Ruel later in life.
