Immigrated to Oregon in 1852
Married 13 Sep 1857 - Linn Co., OR
Died from Typhoid Fever 9 Sep 1869

Daniel Harvey Bodine was one of at least twelve children borne of the union of William Alsworth and Matilda Bodine, natives of New York who had married and relocated, 1st to Ohio, where their first four children were born. They then moved to Jackson Township, Rush County, Indiana, where the remaining eight children were born from 1834 thru 1847. In 1850, the family was listed as follows:
Bodine, William A., Farmer, age 55, b.New York
Bodine, Matilda, (wife), age 44, b. New York
Bodine, Elizabeth, (daughter), age 28, b.Ohio
Bodine, Charles B., (son), Carpenter, age 25, b.Ohio
Bodine, Daniel H., (son), Carpenter, age 23, b.Ohio
Bodine, Julia D., (daughter), age 18, b.Ohio
Bodine, Hannah, (daughter), age 16, b. Indiana
Bodine, William A., (son), age 14, b. Indiana
Bodine, Elvira E., (daughter), age 13, b. Indiana
Bodine, Frances, (son), age 10, b. Indiana
Bodine, Samuel S., (son), age 9, b. Indiana
Bodine, David S., (son), age 7, b. Indiana
Bodine, Matilda S., (daughter), age 3, b. Indiana
The land was valued at $2000.
By 1860, the land would be valued at $4800 and Daniel's father would state he had $1202 in cash, but only seven children would still be in their home in Indiana; young William, now 24 yrs. of age, was a gunsmith and had $450. And son Frances, now 19 yrs. old, was now a farmer, as was Samuel. Daughters Hannah and Elvira were unmarried and in the home. Young David and Matilda would still be in school.
Daniel had left home for the Oregon Territory in 1852. He settled in the Willamette Valley and met Margaretta Young Foster, a native of Pennsylvania who had come West with her siblings in 1850. Daniel and Margaretta married on September 13th, 1857 in Linn County. Initially, they lived in the town of Albany. By the time the 1860 Census was taken on Aug 21st, 1860, they were the parents of William, age 2 yrs., and Oscar, 7 months of age. Their land was valued at $2500 and they had $400. He then built a home for them to live in as he was a Carpenter by trade, but also had learned much about farming from his father; they had a donation land claim in the East Albany & Syracuse area that they farmed in addition to his working as a carpenter. They would have a total of six children: William Albert, b.1858, Oscar T., b.1860, Malinda Isabella, b.1861, Samuel Smith, b.1864, Daniel Harvey Jr., b.1865, and *James A., b.1867. Tragedy struck their family in late August or early September 1869 when Daniel came down with Typhoid Fever. His wife nursed him as best she could but Daniel died on September 9th, 1869, 15 days before his 42nd birthday. Margaretta was stunned and numb. She was a widow at the age of 41, the mother of six young children. All she could do was accept the aid of her neighbors and relatives, the Calvin Peter Burkhart family who lived next door. The Burkharts had married into the Foster family so were more than willing to render aid until her children were old enough to farm the land themselves. The 1880 Census, taken on June 14th of that year, shows Margaret Bodine listing herself as a Farmer and Widow, still in the E. Albany and Syracuse area of Linn County. Her older sons, William Albert and Oscar T., now 21 and 20 respectively, are also listed as Farmers. Malinda, now 18, is a School Teacher. Samuel, Daniel and James work on the farm. Magaretta would never remarry, but would die in 1900 at the age of 72 yrs. and be interred next to her dear husband, Daniel, at Riverside Cemetery, Albany, Linn County, Oregon, where he had been buried 41 years before.

* Per different family records, James Andrew Bodine died Nov 18, 1935 (or 1934). He may have died in San Francisco, CA. He was a Carpenter, had a wife named Anna and a daughter named Mable G. He is the only child I have not been able to locate as of Aug 2019.
**Thank You to Martin Burrell for the email advising me of the cause of my relative's death 155 years ago. I went back and corrected some errors I'd made. If not for you, who knows how long they would have been there? Thank you, again! 16 January 2015
