Oscar T. Bodine was a 1st generation Oregonian, along with his three brothers and sister. All were borne of the union between Daniel Harvey Bodine, who had come alone to the Oregon Territory in 1852, and Margaretta Young Foster, a native of Pennsylvania, who had come with her brothers and settled initially in Indiana in 1835, then on to the Oregon Territory in 1850. Both the Bodine and Foster families had settled in what would become the Linn County area and Daniel and Margaretta had married on Sep 13, 1857. Daniel, a Carpenter by trade, built his bride a home on their Donation land Claim in the Albany area and, by the time the 1860 Census was taken (the new State of Oregon's 1st Official Census) on Aug 21st, 1860, Daniel and Margaret had two sons: William, age 2 yrs., and Oscar, age 7 months. Their land was valued at $2500, and they had $400 cash on hand. Daniel continued to list his occupation as Carpenter, but he was farming their land as well. Four more children were born in the following decade: Malinda Isabella, b.Oct 1861, Samuel Smith, b.Jan 1864, Daniel Harvey, b.Dec 1865, and James A., b.Oct 1867.
Tragically, Oscar's father would die of Typhoid Fever on Sep 9, 1869, just 15 days before his 42nd birthday. He was buried at Riverside Cemetery a few days later. Margaret, just 41 years old, was now a widow and responsible for her six children. The 1870 Census was taken 11 months later, on the 4th of July, 1870. Margaret now listed herself as a Farmer and William, the eldest son, now 12 years old, worked on the farm. Oscar and Malinda attended school, and Samuel, Daniel and James were in the home, cared for by Margaret. Their land was now valued at $8600 and they had $1174 in cash (Remember, this was taken during and after the harvests). The 1880 Census, taken June 15, 1880, and the areas enumerated included both East Albany and Syracuse (a township that is now a neighborhood in Albany). Oscar's mother continued to live in the home and listed herself as a Farmer. Eldest brother William was listed as both a Farmer and Horticulturalist. Oscar, now 20, was still at home, as were Malinda, 18, and now a school Teacher, Samuel, 16, Daniel, 14, and James, now 12 yrs. of age, all helped by working on the Farm. It was a common practice for children to remain at their parental home until they married. Oscar died on June 19th, 1892, at the age of 32yrs., 5m., and 1 day. The reason for his death is not known to me, but he was buried near his father whom he'd lost 23 years before, at Riverside Cemetery in Albany. His mother, Margaretta, passed away in 1900 after living a long life of 72 years, having never remarried. She was also interred at Riverside Cemetery. May they All Rest Peacefully.
