John was born on his parent's farm south of New Hampton, Iowa. He married Matilda Cook on April 26, 1904. They farmed south of town until October, 1914, when his failing health forced him to retire. They spent some time in Hemingford, Nebraska and other places hoping to improve his health but returned to a home on East Main Street in New Hampton to live. John died of heart failure at the age of forty.
Survivors were his wife; brothers and sisters: Mrs. Mathilda (William) Delsing of Hemingford, Nebraska; Henry Holschlag, Theodore Holschlag and Ben Holschlag of Chickasaw County; Mrs. John Brus of Alta Vista, Iowa; Mrs. Mary (Peter) Brommenschenkel of Ada, Minnesota; and Mrs. Anna (Nick) Peters of New Hampton.
