Henry Holschlag was born in Rhede, Germany. He came to the United States in 1847 with his parents who first located at New Orleans, Louisiana and later at Davenport, Iowa. In 1864, he married in Davenport to Miss Adelaide Brus and in 1876, they moved to Chickasaw County, Iowa. They located on a homestead. Henry ran a profitable farm and had one of the largest farmsteads around the area with 360 acres located about two miles south of New Hampton, Iowa. In 1890, he was on a committee to establish a parochial school associated with St. Mary's parish. The survivors listed in his obituary were his wife and eight children: Mrs. William Delsing of Dunlap, Neb., H. W. Holschlag, Jr., Mrs. Lena Brus and Mrs. Nick Peters of the New Hampton area, and Theodore, John, Bernard and Mary living at home and eleven grandchildren. He and Adelheid also had four other children who died in infancy.
