PROMINENT WOODVILLE RESIDENT PASSES

In the passing of Mr John Harding on Thursday, Woodville lost one of its best known and widely respected residents. Mr Harding had taken an active part in the public life of that town for years and any movement that had for its object the benefiting og his fellow-citizens received his whole-hearted support.
Born in Great Barrington, Oxfordshire, England on February 18 1865, the late Mr Harding came out to New Zealand with his parents as a boy of 10. The trip was made in the sailing ship Inverene and the family landed at Napier in March 1875. For two years he went to school at Waipawa, his education being completed when the family removed to Woodville.
As a young man Mr Harding took up land at Mangahao, where he and Mrs Harding underwent many of the privations of the pioneer settlers of the Dominion. On the occasion of big bush fires 30 years ago, Mr Harding had to protect his wife and family by putting them down a well for hours while he fought the flames. Returning to Woodville, he took up the well-known property "Croxford"
Among the bodies that Mr Harding was associated with were the Woodville Borough Council, the Dannevirke Hospital Board and the Napier War Relief Association, of which he was chairman. He was one of the earliest Rechabites of the Hope of Woodville Tent. Perhaps his greatest interest was in the Methodist Church, of which he was circuit steward and superintendent of the Sunday School for 25 years.
Besides the widow, he leaves a grownup family of four girls and one boy to mourn his passing and to them will be extended the sympathy of a very wide circle of friends. The members of the family are: Mrs George Thomas (Otane), Miss C. Harding (Woodville), Mrs M. F. Ryan (Pahiatua), Miss Mavis Harding (Woodville) and Mr Edward Harding (Woodville).
Mr Harding had not enjoyed the best of health in recent months and a fortnight ago he entered the Wellington Hospital, where his death occurred at 11.30 p.m. on Thursday. The funeral is to take place at Woodville to-day.

MAKOMAKO, 10 Feb 1933
The late Mr John Harding, whose death occurred in Wellington hospital on Thursday of last week, was one of the pioneer settlers of this district. Of a quiet disposition he endeared himself to all of the early residents, taking an active interest in all movements making for the improvement of the district. Mr Harding was the first postmaster in Makomako, which position he held for some years. He was chairman of the school committee and superintendent of the Sunday school. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved wife and family.
