Harriet Cole was the oldest daughter of Phineas Cole, Jr. and his wife Ursula Ann Webber. She was born in Lewis County, New York, where her family lived in 1820.
On 28 November 1843, Harriet married Marcus DeForest Smith, who was her second cousin (their grandmothers, Desire and Lavinia Dodge, were sisters). By 1850, the couple was residing in Cornwall, Litchfield County, Connecticut, where they remained for the rest of their lives. In total, they had the following seven children:
Henry Cole Smith (b. 1845), who married Marguerite McCampbell;
William Marcus Smith (b. 1847) who married Laura L. Pearse;
Walter Dodge Smith (1849-1926), who married 1st Adelle Tracy, 2nd Mary L. Coe, and 3rd Annie L. Goodwin, and moved to Atlanta, Georgia;
Caroline Smith (b. 1853), who married Arden H. Coe;
Charles Edward Smith (b. 1855), who married Amelia Ketterer;
Cornelia Buxton Smith (b. 1858), who remained single;
