Marcus DeForest Smith was one of the large family of John and Betsey Mercy (Chamberlain) Smith, a couple who moved from Connecticut to Chickasaw County, Iowa. His siblings were Walter Smith, Leander C. Smith, John Edward Smith (1824-1865), Cassendana B. Smith (b. 1826 and died young), Cassendana M. Smith (married Dwight Berry), Elmore Smith (b. 1829), Orpha Smith (b. 1831), Henry Clay Smith (b. 1834, died in Civil War), Charlotte B. Smith (married Philander Vaill), Swift B. Smith, and Harriet C. Smith (b. 1844).

While Marcus's parents moved away to Iowa, Marcus remained a farmer in Litchfield County, Connecticut. In 1864 he was a supervisor in the construction of the West Cornwall Covered Bridge, which "is a wooden covered lattice truss bridge carrying the Sharon-Goshen Turnpike over the Housatonic River in the town of Cornwall, Connecticut" (description from the article about it in Wikipedia). It's still in use today.
