Cornelius Fomby son of Matthew Bates Formby and Mary Meadows married Mary Josephine Hairston in 1868 in Texas. According to the Federal Census Cornelius was a farmer both before and after the Civil War. On 1 Apr 1862 Cornelius enlisted as a private in the 14th Battalion, Companies C & G, Georgia Light Artillery (Montgomery's) CSA. On 4 May 1865 surrendered and held as a prisoner of war. 14 May 1865 Cornelius was pardened and released at Gainsville, Alabama. After the war he married Mary and together they had 3 known children:
Caroline Jane - b. 1869 d. 1953
Sarah Frances - b. 1870 d. 1913
James William - b. 1873 d. 1956
