German Nobility. Margrave of the Niederlausitz (Lower Lusatia). Son of Margrave Albrecht II and Margarete von Hohenstaufen, a daughter of emperor Friedrich II. After his mother had fled from the Wartburg he and his older brother Friedrich where raised at their uncles court. Together with his brothers he fought their father for their heritage because he favored their half brother Apiz. They were successful and Albrecht II had to resign and hand over his possessions to his sons. Dietrich married Jutta of Henneberg in 1295. Friedrich and he fought against King Albrecht II on May 31st, 1307 in the Battle of Lucka and completely defeated him. There are several versions about his death; one says he was stabbed on December 10th, 1307 at the St. Thomas church while praying in front of the altar and another says it happened on December 24th, in the Paulinerkirche. Both versions were recorded several decades after his death. One document, which is more believable, says he died peacefully in the spring of 1308. He found his resting place in the Paulinerkirche but was exhumed during the Thirty-Years-War. His bones were placed in a chest and reburied in 1841 in front the altar under the statue by Ernst Rietschel. After the Paulinerkirche was blown up in 1968, the statue was one of the things that could be saved and was brought to the Thomaskirche.
