Dr. James H. Hall was educated at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, matriculating at the age of 22 years, 2 months. Previously he had studied medicine at the office of his father and preceptor, Dr. L. A. Hall. He practiced medicine in St. Louis and Manchester, Missouri, and in Petaluma, California. He married Sarah Gibbons Thomas on 30 October 1831 in Wilmington, Delaware, and they had thirteen children: Augustus Renatus Hall, Elizabeth Selby Hall Triplett, Sarah Ann Maria Hall, Dr. James H. Hall, Jr., Charles H. Hall, Lemuel Thomas Hall, Mary Louise Hall Lewis, Frederick Bates Hall, John William Hall, Joseph Edward Hall, Walter R. Hall, Sally R. Hall Cromwell, and Gilbert Pine Hall.

His death was announced in The Sonoma Democrat:
Death of Dr. J. H. Hall. Dr. James Henry Hall died at his home in Petaluma, Saturday morning, at 11:30 o'clock, at the age of 82 years.... His death was peaceful and occurred in the midst of his children, County Auditor [Gilbert Pine] Hall, E. J. Hall, E. J. Hall and Mrs. Lewis of Petaluma. The deceased was a native of Delaware. He came to this State in the pioneer days and resided in Petaluma many years, where he practiced his profession. He was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him.

DR. HALL'S FUNERAL. The Last Sad Rites Participated in by Many Old Friends.
The funeral of Dr. James B. (sic) Hall, whose death was chronicled in last Sunday's issue of the Courier, was held at the residence of his son-in-law, W. A. Lewis, corner of Sixth and C strees, at 10 o'clock Sunday.
The funeral was very largely attended. Many of Petaluma's oldest citizens were present to pay the last respect to one of the oldest and most generally respected of Petaluma's citizens. The funeral was one of the larges seen in this city for a long time past, and was a very fitting tribute to a man remembered by all of his many friends as the very highest type of manhood.
The pallbearers were: J. M. Palmer, Cooper A. Shelton, Maj. Jas. Singley, Henry L. Lawrence, David Walls and Jeff Thompson.
