In 1853 Augustus enlisted in the U.S. Army in Benicia, California. Old military records on Ancestry.com reveal his military history: He deserts in 1854, the next day "rejoins from desertion", and deserts again in 1855. This time he he is tried and found guilty of perjury, desertion then considered the highest form of perjury. He is sentenced to one year at San Quentin Prison. The last entry on Augustus Hall is a short note on a prison roster: "Drowned Jany 30 '56 off sloop."
At that time the Hall family were living in Manchester, Missouri. The father of August entered no further information about this son in the Hall Family Bible and it's very possible that the family never knew what happened to their son.
